The Life I Thought I'd Have

I used to think by now I'd understand
The roads that brought me here, the turns I'd made,
That life would somehow follow what I'd planned,
And all my doubts would quietly start to fade.

But years have passed, and still I sometimes see
The lives of others moving further on,
And wonder what became of all the dreams
I carried once, before the years were gone.

Yet somewhere in the wreckage of it all,
Among the things I've lost and those I've kept,
I've learned that even those who sometimes fall
Have earned the right to rest, and to accept.

And though I'm not the man I hoped to be,
Perhaps there's still some worth in being me.
